SBCGS Upcoming Events – 2010
March 20, 2010 Program
Saturday, March 20, 2010
10:30 - Noon
First Presbyterian Church, 21 N. Constance at State
Triple-Dipping at the U.S. Pension Bureau. It isn't often that, besides the soldier's own pension, the United States Government will actually pay a widow's pension to two widows of that same soldier. In a PowerPoint presentation on 20 March, our own Cari Thomas will tell the story and share her research into this unusual occurrence in her family history.
Cari became interested in her family history in 1995, when she finally read her family‚s 26 Civil War letters to, from, and about her M.I.A. Civil War great-great-grandfather; and is currently the Chaplain of our local Laura Belle Stoddard Tent 22 of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865. She is a 14 year member of the SBCGS, even though all of her known USA ancestry was east of Illinois and north of the Mason-Dixon line. Cari co-chairs the 2010 How-To Seminar; leads an open "German Ancestry" group prior to SBCGS monthly meetings (excepting this month); and will teach her fifth Spring Session course on "Beginning Germanic Genealogy" beginning 13 April 2010, through SBCC Continuing Education, ie. Adult Education. The course will be held for eight weeks on Tuesdays from 5:15 to 7:15 pm, Rm. 26 at the Wake Center.
